The Power of Choice

Family Mediation Puts You in Control

When relationships change, making decisions about your children’s future can feel overwhelming. At Adelaide Family Mediation, we believe that you—not a judge or a lawyer—should be the one making those important choices. Mediation empowers parents to remain in control, ensuring that the decisions about their children’s lives are made by those who know them best: you and the other parent.

Why Choose Mediation?

In court, a judge who has only met your family for a brief time may decide:

✅ How long each parent spends with the children

✅ Where the children live

✅ What school they attend

✅ Other critical aspects of their upbringing

This process can feel impersonal, stressful, and often leaves parents feeling unheard. Mediation, on the other hand, gives you the opportunity to self-determine—to come together (even if separately through shuttle mediation) and find solutions that work for everyone, especially your children.

Our Role - Removing Roadblocks, Not Creating Them

As mediators, our role is to help you work through challenges, not add to them. Mediation isn’t about taking sides—it’s about finding practical solutions so you can co-parent effectively. If there are concerns, such as the children staying up too late or being late for school, we work with both parents to discuss routines and agree on a structure that benefits the children.

Rather than arguing about who is right, we focus on:

🔹 What is happening now

🔹 What the challenges are

🔹 What needs to change to serve the best interests of the children

Addressing Safety & Parenting Concerns

If you have concerns about safety or the other parent’s parenting style, mediation provides a structured space to voice those concerns and work towards solutions. Safety concerns can range from serious risks such as exposure to domestic violence, neglect, or substance abuse to more practical parenting issues such as inconsistent routines, difficulty managing emotions, or a lack of clear communication about the children’s needs.

For example, if you are worried that the children are not getting enough sleep or are frequently late for school, we can work together to set agreed-upon bedtimes, morning routines, and school drop-off procedures. If there are concerns about supervision, discipline, or how major decisions are made, mediation allows both parents to discuss expectations and establish clear guidelines.

If there are significant safety concerns, mediation can also help set protective measures—such as supervised visits, check-ins, or agreements about who can be around the children—so that both parents feel reassured about their child’s well-being. The goal is to create a safe, stable environment where children can thrive while allowing both parents to have a meaningful role in their lives.
